Akoya Cultured Pearl Necklace Collection | SY Perlas
If you’re looking for the classic white pearl necklace—perfectly
round with that unmistakable luster that has defined elegance for decades—you’re in the right place. At SY Perlas, we offer the excellence of high jewelry: Genuine Cultured Pearls imported directly from the saltwater of Japan.
Unlike Freshwater necklaces, where some natural variation is accepted, an Akoya necklace demands absolute precision. It’s the favorite choice for brides, anniversaries, and family heirlooms, as its luster—like a mirror—illuminates the skin with an intensity no other gem can match.
The art of selection and craftsmanship
What truly determines the value of our Akoya necklaces is the rigorous selection process, known as "matching," and meticulous hand assembly:
- Uniformity Selection: Creating a single Akoya necklace requires reviewing thousands of pearls. Our experts hand-select each gem to ensure they all have size, color, overtone (rosy or silver hue), and luster as close as possible. The goal is for the necklace to look like a continuous, perfect line of light, without any pearl standing out of place.
- Hand-Knotting with Safety Knots: Each necklace is handcrafted using high-strength silk thread. We tie an individual knot between each pearl. This serves two vital purposes: it prevents pearls from rubbing against each other, protecting their nacre; and if the necklace were to snag and break, only one pearl would come loose, keeping the rest safe.
- High Jewelry Clasps: To crown a piece of this caliber, we use only secure clasps in 18k Gold (white or yellow). The clasp isn’t just functional; it’s a jewel in its own right that ensures your investment stays secure around your neck.
If you’re looking for a more economical and hard-wearing option for intensive everyday use, we invite you to see our Freshwater Pearl Necklaces.
Frequently Asked Questions about Akoya Necklaces
Why is there such a price difference from one model to
another?
With Akoya pearls, every millimeter makes an exponential difference. As size increases (for example, going from 7 mm to 9 mm), the pearl’s rarity skyrockets, because it’s very difficult for the oyster to produce large, perfectly round pearls.
What length is right?
Length is a very personal choice. While our standard is the classic Princess length (42 cm) because it flatters any neckline, at SY Perlas we adapt to you. Since we string each piece by hand in our atelier, if you prefer a choker style (38–40 cm), just note it on your order; and if you want special longer lengths
(45, 60, or 90 cm), feel free to contact us directly so we can craft it to your measurements.
How do I maintain my necklace’s mirror-like luster?
The nacre of an Akoya pearl is spectacular but more delicate than that of Freshwater pearls. The "enemy" is acid (sweat, perfume, hairspray). The golden rule is: the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off. After wearing, gently wipe the pearls with a soft cloth or a special jewelry cloth to remove residue before storing them in their case.
