Certificate of Origin

Some pearls are recognized for their size, others for their lustre. Australian South Sea pearls have both.

They grow in the Pinctada maxima, the largest of the pearl-bearing oysters, in Australian waters. Over the course of several years, the oyster coats the nucleus layer by layer in nacre, forming pearls with a diameter few varieties can match, luminous white with silvery reflections.

This necklace brings together 43 of them, chosen one by one to create a harmonious whole: very round, with very high lustre and graduated from 9 to 11.2 mm, with the largest pearls at the center. A piece that goes just as well with an evening dress as with a white shirt, designed to be worn for decades.

We grade it factor by factor according to our scale: AAA for lustre, shape, color, and matching, and AA+ for surface.

The necklace shown in the photos and video is exactly the one you will receive.

What sets it apart

Very high lustre. Lustre is the clarity with which a pearl's surface reflects light, and for us, it is a pearl's most important quality. This necklace has very high lustre: each pearl has a well-defined reflection and a light that seems to come from within the nacre.

Very round pearls. In South Sea pearls, a round shape is the rarest and most sought-after. The pearls in this necklace are very round and roll smoothly in your hand.

Carefully matched. Matching means bringing together pearls that are similar in color, lustre, and shape, so the necklace looks like a single piece. Here, the sizes transition gradually, no pearl breaks the harmony, and the color, lustre, and surface are very well matched.

White with a silvery overtone. An overtone is the hue that floats over a pearl's base color. These pearls have a light silvery overtone. Some also show a very subtle pink hue, visible only in certain lighting and from certain angles; in other lighting, the necklace simply looks white with a hint of silver. This is a characteristic shade of white South Sea pearls.

Small blemishes. Pearls grow inside living oysters, and their surfaces almost always bear some trace of this process. The pearls in this necklace have tiny natural blemishes: they are visible when you examine the pearls closely with the necklace in your hand, but are difficult to distinguish at the distance from which you view a piece of jewelry when worn.

If you'd like, you can request a Virtual Appointment and we'll show it to you up close and in different lighting.

Hand-knotted on silk with your choice of clasp: We hand-string the necklace, separating each pearl with a knot in silk thread. This keeps the pearls from rubbing against one another and, if the thread ever breaks, prevents them all from coming loose. You can choose a yellow or white 18K gold clasp.

Selection

Miguel Carabel, founder of SY Perlas and a GIA pearl graduate, personally selects each necklace. We buy directly from producers, and only 5% of harvested pearls meet our standards. Behind this approach are three generations devoted to pearls since the 1960s.
